What is Content Protection?

To watch movies and TV shows on Prime Video, your connected devices must meet High-Bandwidth Digital Content Protection (HDCP) and/or Digital Rights Management (DRM) requirements.

HDCP and DRM are access control and content protection technologies that enable content owners to set policies about copying or viewing their protected digital content.


HDCP works specifically to prevent unauthorized duplication of High Definition (HD) and Ultra High Definition (UHD) audio and video content. Streaming media players (like Amazon Fire TV and Fire TV Stick, Apple TV, Roku, etc.) and devices or hardware connected to your computer use HDCP.

Prime Video and these devices automatically detect whether your setup meets these requirements. If not, a notification typically displays on-screen to let you know. The video also switches to a format your device can support (for example, HD instead of UHD or SD instead of HD).

HDCP 2.2 for 4K Ultra HD

4K Ultra HD requires HDCP 2.2 devices, cables, and display ports (for TVs, this is your HDMI connector). Check with the manufacturer of your device, cables, and TV to see if it meets HDCP 2.2 requirements.

If you have an Amazon Fire TV, you can check HDCP 2.2 compatibility by doing the following:

  1. From the Amazon Fire TV Display menu, go to Settings > Display & Sounds > Display.
  2. Open the video resolution section, which includes HDCP 2.2 specifications.

A "4K Ultra HD" indicator also shows in the playback controls whenever your Amazon Fire TV is streaming video in 4K Ultra HD.

HDCP for Prime Video on Computers

You can only stream Prime Video content in HD through your computer's web browser if your computer and connected display screen meet HDCP requirements.

If your computer or connected display do not meet HDCP requirements, the video you're watching plays in Standard Definition, and an error message shows in the player window.

Note: Some Video Graphics Array (VGA) and Digital Visual Interface (DVI) connections and monitors don't support HDCP, which can prevent your computer from meeting HDCP requirements.
