Amy Trefry

Amy Trefry is a queer, non-binary Canadian filmmaker and performer whose work is largely devoted to finding levity in subjects that are categorically not funny. Death, grief, body image, animal smuggling, and other lighthearted themes are central to their recent projects. They are the co-founder and owner of Interwoven Films, a production company dedicated to non-binary, female, and LGBTQIA+ storytelling, ideally at the precise intersection of empathy and discomfort. They are a graduate of the Canadian Film Centre Producers Lab, the TIFF Writers Lab, and the RDV Canada: Meet the Series program, through which they were identified as one of ten emerging Canadian television producers. They are also the 2024 recipient of the Sloan Science and Technology Fellowship, a 2025 participant of the EAVE Producers Marketing Workshop, and a current participant in the Women in the Director’s Chair Story & Leadership Program. In 2025, they were named one of Playback’s Top 10 to Watch, which they took as permission to keep going. Trefry writes and directs the original series Good Grief (OUTtv), which they co-created with their long-time film partner Katerina Bakolias, and which won Best Newform Drama at the International Drama Awards in London for its first season, a distinction they mention often and without irony. Season 2 premiered in 2025. The series, set in a maritime drag bar, continues to explore inter-generational queer friendship, glamour, and the inevitability of death, all through the medium of comedy.
