George Pan Cosmatos was a Greek-Italian filmmaker best known for his distinctive blend of stylish direction and large-scale storytelling. Moving to North America, he expanded his reputation as a director of gripping genre films, including the psychological horror Of Unknown Origin (1983), the box-office hit Rambo: First Blood Part II (1985), and the neo-noir action film Cobra (1986), both starring Sylvester Stallone. In 1989 he directed the science-fiction thriller Leviathan (1989), followed by the acclaimed Western Tombstone (1993), praised particularly for Val Kilmer's performance as Doc Holliday. Known for his polished visual style and command of action-driven storytelling, Cosmatos left behind a diverse legacy that bridged European artistry with Hollywood spectacle.
