James Cotten is a filmmaker whose work occupies the borderlands between genre and literary cinema. Trained in London and Los Angeles, Cotten’s films reflect a fascination with outsiders, survival, and the unspoken emotional architecture of violence. His projects range from crime thrillers to female-led westerns and cult horror, unified by a craftsman’s touch and a storyteller’s sensitivity. With his first feature, Demon Slayer, Cotten came up through the legendary Roger Corman ecosystem, inheriting a practical approach to filmmaking that privileges resourcefulness, collaboration, and completion. His films often explore the tension between identity and circumstance, and the ways characters perform their own mythologies-whether through grit, desire, or reinvention. He has worked with and directed Hollywood icons like Andy Garcia, Ray Liotta, Danny Trejo, Cary Elwes and Ashley Judd. His film La Linea was the number three most rented movie in America. He has owned or managed four post facilities with over 50 post producing credits, including Pitch Perfect, Extaction 2 and Captain Fantastic. He was recently honored with an induction into the Los Angeles Film School’s Spotlight Academy (their hall of fame). Cotten’s career defies neat categorization, and his work suggests a filmmaker interested not in prestige or genre for its own sake, but in the emotional and cultural spaces where the two collide.
