David Collins is unexpectedly acquitted on a technicality having served seven years of a life sentence for the murder of his wife Tara.

DI Kathy Hudson leads small investigative team to find Tara's killer and begins by re-checking every statement that was given to the initial investigation. Tara's sister Alice wants to deny David any contact with the kids, but is told that that is the stupidest thing she could do.

The police investigation focuses on Alice after discovering trouble over a large loan and hostile texts. David's brother Phil admits that he's been laid off, and David attempts to repay his debt of gratitude he feels.

Cathy angrily confronts Will. David's attempt to earn money to support his children and repay his debts backfires when a newspaper sensationalizes his story.
