John "J.D" Dorian feels completely inept as he is forced upon quirky patients and must endure abuses by the resident doctors at the teaching hospital. His best friend, Chris Turk, appears just the opposite, hanging out with his fellow surgical jocks. And then there is Dr. Elliot Reid, a beautiful, young and confident female medical intern, who J.D. quickly becomes attracted to.

After two weeks at the hospital, J.D. is beginning to feel confident as a doctor. However his new patient, Will Forte, a young, chronic smoker who may have cancer, challenges J.D.'s bedside manner. J.D. becomes frustrated with Will's casual attitude during his attempts to lecture Will about his serious condition. Will gets the best of J.D. when J.D.

J.D. and Elliot are spending a lot of time together during rounds at the hospital. One night, as they are monitoring a patient's heart rhythms, they lean in to kiss each other, but are interrupted by Dr. Cox bursting into the room with treatment instructions for the patient. J.D. now has 48 hours to kiss Elliot before officially entering "The Friend Zone".

J.D., Elliot and Turk are each assigned patients with different illnesses. They, as doctors, know that statistically one in three patients admitted to the hospital will die. J.D.'s patient is Mrs. Tanner, an 86-year-old grandmother in renal failure who feels it is time to pass on. A shocked J.D.

J.D. innocently reveals to Dr. Kelso an unapproved procedure Dr. Cox is attempting behind Dr. Kelso's back. Dr. Cox is furious because he was trying to help a patient whose insurance does not cover the needed testing. A pleased Dr. Kelso invites J.D. to join his weekly golf game, which includes Dr. Cox, who revels in defeating Dr. Kelso each week on the course. During the round, Dr. Cox and Dr.

J.D. is assigned to patient Jordan Sullivan, a beautiful but ill-tempered young woman who happens to be an important hospital board member. Hoping Jordan can get Dr. Cox's suspension lifted, J.D. attempts to befriend Jordan and winds up sleeping with her. To J.D.'s horror, he discovers that Jordan was married to Dr. Cox, and their divorce was far from pleasant.

J.D. is "top gun" in the eyes of Dr. Kelso until a fellow medical student, turned intern, Nick Murdoch walked into the picture. J.D. suddenly perceives himself as inferior to Nick, who always has a positive attitude, knows all the answers to Dr. Kelso's random medical questions, exhibits great rapport with the nurses and displays an impeccable bedside manner with his patients.

During a lunch break, J.D. and Turk visit a strip club where a TV news crew is covering a group of protesters picketing the club. When the cameraman collapses, J.D. and Turk rush to save him and their actions are caught on camera. Feeling like heroes, J.D. and Turk return to work where Dr. Kelso praises them to the media and totes the virtues of his hospital. Dr.

It's Thanksgiving week and J.D. is admitted into Sacred Heart Hospital with appendicitis. Elliot is the doctor assigned to J.D.'s case and Turk will be performing the surgery. J.D. is nervous about Turk operating on him because he does not see Turk as a serious surgeon but rather the crazy, immature frat guy he knew from college. J.D.

After working at the hospital for a few months J.D., Turk, Carla and Elliot have bonded and even start sticking up for each other. J.D. and Carla attempt to take their relationship beyond their professions and actually try to become friends. Carla even sticks up for J.D. after Dr. Cox rips him a new one. But when J.D.

It's Christmas Eve and the holiday season produces mixed feelings in everyone. J.D. is feeling a little down about having to spend the holidays in the hospital and then Dr. Cox asks him to videotape the birth of his friend's, The Wheelers, baby. Dr. Cox is definitely not in the holiday spirit when his ex-wife Jordan Sullivan returns to torture him. Dr.

It's an unusually hectic night at the hospital, with the doctors busy juggling patients and Dr. Cox barking orders at everyone. Dr. Cox is more gruff than usual because he is trying to accomplish the equivalent of a pitcher's "no hitter" - having no patients die during his twelve-hour shift. Meanwhile, hospital social worker Alex Hayden, slipped in the hospital, knocking herself unconscious.

Alex is about to emerge from the M.R.I. machine. J.D. is waiting in anticipation because he just asked her out but he doesn't know what she looks like. She's very attractive. The two of them have a romantic dinner at a restaurant one night and are enjoying a second date the next night when they are interrupted by a page from Dr. Cox. Later in the week, J.D.

The relationships between the interns, doctors and the nurse are developing into some unlikely combinations. J.D. has a crush on Alex, one of the social workers in charge of his drug addict patient, Mr. Barnes. Fortunately for J.D., she feels the same about him. This new relationship strains J.D. and Elliot's friendship. When some drugs are discovered missing and Alex's patient Mr.

J.D. and Elliot decide to take their relationship into a different direction - so they end up spending a whole day in bed together. After the initial awkwardness passes, they realize that the two of them are very compatible. But later, Elliot is reluctant to share their relationship with their friends. Because of her reluctance J.D.

Since J.D. and Elliot's short-lived romance ended badly, they can barely be in the same room together. It has definitely changed their friendship forever. Making things worse, Turk is co-writing a medical study with Elliot, so she is at the apartment all of the time. Elliot later finds out that Turk only picked her because she's a geek and he knew that she would do most of the work.

After finishing their first year as medical interns, J.D., Elliot and Turk move up the medical hierarchy and eagerly await the arrival of new medical students to do their dirty work. J.D. is assigned to supervise Josh, a young medical student who reminds J.D. of himself. With visions of being a noble mentor, J.D.

J.D is faced with his biggest challenge yet when he is assigned a new patient - Mr. Simon, a cantankerous middle-aged man suffering from colon cancer. Intimidated by Mr. Simon's constant belittling, J.D. attempts to avoid all contact with him while trying to medicate him for his pain. All goes well until Mr. Simon dies and J.D's competency as a doctor is put into question. J.D.

Elliot and Turk are down in the dumps because their parents, Lily and Spencer Reid and Martha Turk are coming to see them present their joint paper on peripheral vascular disease at a medical conference. J.D. half-heartedly sympathizes with them, until his own father Sam Dorian shows up. J.D. ends up in a funk like the rest of them. Sam Dorian is crude, lewd and almost always rude.

Elliot meets a new patient, Sean Kelly, who she is immediately attracted to. They're both anal retentive, neurotic and single. Elliot gives off plenty of hints that she's interested in him, but Sean doesn't seem to notice. As a last ditch effort, she chases after him when he gets discharged from the hospital and orders him to ask her out. He does. Meanwhile, Turk and J.D. battle over one of J.

J.D. is accidentally stuck with a needle that was just used to test a patient for Hepatitis B. He's pretty calm considering the fact that he may contract a dangerous disease. The wait for the test results is a long one. During the waiting period he meets four doctors, Dr. Bailey, Dr. Douglas, Dr. Franklin, Dr. Lamar who frighten him with their worst case scenario stories.

Dr. Cox's friend and former brother-in-law Ben Sullivan is at the hospital to have a two-by-four removed from his hand. Ben is Jordan's brother, but he sided with Cox in the divorce and they've remained good friends ever since. J.D.'s patient unexpectedly turns out to be Ben himself. Ben's hand wound begins to bleed while he, J.D. and Dr. Cox are hanging out at a bar playing pool.

Ben takes the news of his leukemia diagnosis pretty well. But it's his sister Jordan who is having problems dealing with it. Also having a problem is J.D. who, unaccustomed to developing close friendships with patients, is not sure what to do. Remarkably, it is Dr. Cox who is the voice of reason and compassion. That changes when Ben starts his chemotherapy treatments.

It's June and the interns are one day away from becoming full-fledged residents. They're excited, but there is something else in the air. Carla and Turk are arguing about dating other people. Elliot finally rebels against being everyone's doormat and J.D. is just trying to stay out of people's way. Adding to the weirdness is Jordan, Dr. Cox's ex-wife, who has returned to get a physical.
