It"s New Year"s in Cape Town, South Africa. Police captain Mat Joubert is still devastated by the murder of his wife, Lara, a member of an elite police unit who was killed 13 months ago during an undercover action. She and her target, Carsten Petterson, with whom she had started an affair in order to convict him, were killed during the operation. Now, Mat is on the verge of taking his own life.

Mat and his new partner, Sanct, get called to a crime scene: the body of Drew Wilson has been found, wearing a Humphrey Bogart mask. On the man's laptop, Mat and Sanct find a picture indicating that the victim had an intimate relationship with Charlie Zeelie, a famous cricket player.

Galia's dead body is found in a quaint lake east of Cape Town. The autopsy reveals that she had been drugged heavily and drowned afterward. Her friend Irena is still at Villa Enigma. She seems to buy Brian's lie that Galia has been sent back to Europe, but soon Irena senses that she is in danger and attempts to escape.

Star coiffeur Oliver Nienaber is in a panic. Anticipating that he could be the next victim, he asks Robin Van Rees, head of Rinkhals Security, for protection. But how is Nienaber linked to the other Mauser victims, and what makes him think he might be the next one?

Mat and Sanct interrogate Oliver Nienaber, whose car was seen at Alexander MacDonald's place. Nienaber at first denies knowing MacDonald but then finally admits he did. Shortly afterwards, the Mauser murderer claims another victim.

Irena Krol is on the run, chased by a Rinkhals Security guard. When she gets hit by a pickup, she is taken to intensive care, but her life remains under threat. How far will the conspirators go to eliminate all potential witnesses?
