Dicing with Death

Guatemala is one of the most violent states in the world. There were nearly 4,000 murders in 2018; a murder rate 20 times higher than France per head of population. Behind this slaughter are street gangs who manage drug trafficking, prostitution and spread terror among the population. The members shoot their rivals, or ordinary citizens who go against them, without hesitation.

Haiti is the poorest country in the Caribbean. To cross the country, there are only dirt tracks to transport people and their goods. Travelling the 80km that separates Gonaïves and Môle Saint Nicolas in the North-east takes up to ten hours. There is one bus which makes the journey, and it is far from a comfortable ride.

In Cameroon, only 2% of the roads have been asphalted. All of the country's inhabitants rely on the Clandos' taxi services, they have no other choice. The country has no railway and taking airplanes is both too expensive and too dangerous.

Suriname is found at the heart of the Amazon: a country of jungle. At 163,000km2, it is a sixth of the size of France, covered in dense, green forest. There are few roads and some tracks and large rivers: floating motorways where canoes serve as cars and trucks. To travel from one village to another, you don't hit the road, you take the river... And its temperamental waters.

For 35 years, Paraguay was led by a strict dictatorship. The country is now getting back to work and the economy is taking off, except for in the Chaco. The region covers half the country yet only has one inhabitant per km2. People are trying to find a way to live in the midst of this wilderness...
