Basil and Robert Thomas, sons of a distinguished local family, return to the valley and shake up Trefelin with big plans for the village.

The Thomas brothers try to win support for their New Town development, complete with modern homes, a supermarket, and a new surgery. Would-be revolutionaries Aled and Daf plot to stop the brothers, while Robert offers Prem a central role in their grand scheme.

Opposition and support for New Trefelin grow in equal measure, and Prem finds himself caught in the middle. Emlyn signs up for a house in the new development, upsetting Megan right as Robert is trying to win her back.

After the mine accident, Prem, Emlyn, and Owen are trapped deep underground, with their situation steadily growing worse. Above ground, Kamini deals with the surgery patients and an AWOL Dan, while Robert attempts to seduce Megan.

When Prem and Emlyn surmise that the mine collapse was no accident, Aled and Daf become the prime suspects. Dr. Sharma confronts the Thomas brothers about their real plans for New Trefelin.
