It’s midnight in 1940’s San Francisco and Lou Peckinpaugh (Peter Falk), a clumsy, bumbling private eye, has just learned that his partner has been found dead. Because of his amorous involvement with his partner s widow (Marsha Mason), Lou is a prime suspect, forcing him to either solve the murder or take the rap.
