When the engines have a hard time sleeping, Thomas tells them the story of Duke, and how he earned the nickname Grandpuff. Duke warns cheeky Stuart and Falcon with the story of Smudger, a showoff engine. But it's the story of the mine's closing and the search for the Lost Engine that gives everyone the fairy tale ending they like.

Duke is the hero of all the engines. Whether he's the bulldog standing firm and saving Falcon from the edge of a mountainside or always pulling his train even when he feels ill. This Grandpuff shows that he is a Really Useful Engine, even when he's playing a joke on Stuart.

There's trouble on the track for Sir Handel! First, some rude trucks bump him off the rails. When he has to be mended, Skarloey comes to the rescue. Old Faithful shows there's still a lot of puff left in this little engine. But it's Sir Handel's bad attitude that gives him the greatest troubles...first on the rails and then with Sir Topham Hatt!

Peter Sam is busier than ever doing Sir Handel's work and collecting passengers. In his haste not to be late for Henry, Peter Sam leaves the refreshment lady behind. Peter Sam was tricked into doing Sir Handel's work. Sir Handel doesn't like working with trucks and they don't like working with him. When the angry trucks think Peter Sam is Sir Handel, there's trouble for Peter Sam and Sir Handel!

Skarloey was delighted to return home after being mended. Skarloey sees how helpful Rusty the diesel has been on the line. But he quickly learns that Duncan's bouncy and rude attitude has Duncan rocking n' rolling on the rails...and needing lots of rescuing.

Peter Sam has been promised a new funnel since his accident. The wintry wind makes Peter Sam's old funnel wobble. And an icicle breaks it off. When his driver sees a drainpipe, Peter Sam's new funnel isn't as special as he'd like. Sir Handel thinks his wheels are special and shows off. When racing with George the steamroller, their squabbles cause confusion and delay...and no one is the winner.

Skarloey enjoys being polished by the conductor's daughter, but it makes Duncan jealous. When Skarloey's coach derails, Duncan helps. But his rude behavior angers the passengers. With Duncan still grumbling, Skarloey tells him the story of the gallant old engine. When Rheneas' valve gear jammed, he kept going until his passengers reached the station. Duncan realizes how important passengers are.

Rusty needs help on his line. With advice from Douglas, Rusty heads to the other railway where only diesels dare to go. Brave Rusty rescues Stepney, who now works the Bluebell line. When Thomas brags to Percy that his branch is the pride of the line, Percy tells him about another engine with a famous branch line. Thomas became jealous of Stepney until he gets the chance to really know him.

The railways are very busy and The Diesel has been brought to help. He is rude to the engines by saying they were are out of date. When a train inspector's hat disappears, it's The Diesel who's lost his game. At a signal, Stepney enjoys watching a game of cricket. He didn't realize when the ball landed in one of his cars. The players, in Caroline the Car, pursue Stepney and their missing ball.

Henry is in for quite a surprise when the circus leaves town. He's asked to clear a tunnel that is blocked by something big and alive - the circus elephant! Sir Topham Hatt has an even bigger surprise. The Queen is coming to Sodor! But which engine will be lucky enough to pull the royal train?

All the engines are excited to go on a trip to the big city to visit a little girl who had written Sir Topham Hatt a special letter. When Thomas shows off to Oliver, he almost misses the big trip! Daisy shows off to Toby. She's not afraid of animals...that is until she meets Champion the bull!

Oliver is still worried about working with cars since his accident. The cars know this and tease him all the time. Toad's plan helps Oliver handle S.C. Ruffey and the cars. Duck helps Henry handle the load with more vans needed for the Flying Kipper. But when Henry's tail lamp falls off, it's Duck that has a fine kettle of fish.

Toby is excited to be the special attraction in the seaside parade. His excitement soon turns to disappointment when they've run out of room. Meanwhile, disagreeable barge Bulstrode is cross with some cars at the docks. When they bust through the buffers, Bulstrode finds himself in deep water. And Percy accidentally does postman Tom Tipper a favor when his post van is replaced with a bicycle.
