When name partner Edwin Poole shows up to a staff meeting without pants, visiting attorney Brad Chase is asked to stay on at the Boston branch of Crane, Poole & Schmidt to keep Denny Crane in check.

Shore represents a former lover who tried to kill him, and who is now fighting for release from a mental institution; and Crane behaves strangely during a case, prompting the partners to look for an excuse to get rid of him.

Sally tries her first case; Shore represents a woman claiming she was sexually harassed, and is upset to find that opposing counsel is his ex-girlfriend; and the firm is stymied by an attorney who claims to be Denny Crane’s son.

Alan is asked by his old crush, Samantha, for legal representation to help her husband Jack, who is running for Mayor, when a false rumor has been publicized.

Shore represents a slumlord sentenced to wearing an I am a slumlord sign; Lori defends a man who has been shot in the chest, and who doesn’t want the bullet removed because it will link him to a crime; and Crane is arrested for soliciting.

Shore defends a transvestite Santa in a wrongful termination case; and Lori advises a therapist who is afraid that a patient might be planning a murder.

Shore and Crane discover that the drug company they’re representing has secretly tested an unproven drug on unwitting subjects; and Tara impersonates a flight attendant to get privileged information from opposing counsel in an age discrimination case.

Lori and Brad defend a woman who is accused of murdering her husband and his mistress while they were in bed together. Alan's life becomes in danger when he helps a woman whose ex-husband plans to kidnap their children.

Lori files a motion against the U.S. government on behalf of a Sudanese man trying to draw attention to the genocide in that country; Shore represents a man who killed his mother; and partner Shirley Schmidt, Crane’s former flame, returns to the firm.

The firm defends a school administer being sued for firing teachers who refused to teach creationism; and Shore and Tara represent a former client who beat a recent murder rap and has now killed his next-door neighbor.

Crane defends a doctor accused of selling an experimental drug to a desperate patient; and Brad represents a lesbian accused of faking her homosexuality for financial gain, and finds himself attracted to her.

While out with Tara, Alan ends up causing a bar room brawl and as a result, becomes arrested for conspiracy to commit assault and battery.

Shirley asks Alan Shore to use his odious lawyering to help her defend a police officer accused of torture.

Milton Bombay is asking the courts to allow him to be frozen until another century so he can continue his legacy of being a great lawyer and needs Denny and Shirley to defend him.

Shore and Chelina try to stay the execution of a convict in Texas; and Schmidt and Shore represent an old friend, a middle-aged woman charged with repeatedly paying for sex.
