Classic Time Team

Season 3 brings with it some of the most iconic historical stories around. A 13th century picture of Christ is uncovered, believed to be of the Knights Templar. The Time Team discovers remnants of the Spanish Armada and the weaponry it employed. Taking a step away from the norm, the Time Team unearths the remains of mammoths and other prehistoric animals, all over 200,000 years old.

    The Time Team travels to Boleigh, Cornwall, to investigate a 2,000 year old underground chamber, known as a fogou. Cornwall and other Celtic cultural areas have many examples of these caves, but to date, no one has figure out what they were for. The team has three days to try and figure it out. To help, Tony tries his hand at dowsing, a technique thought to work by harnessing unseen influences.

    Stanton Harcourt is built on a series of old river channels where the Thames flowed 200,000 years ago. At the site of a local land fill, huge numbers of bones belonging to a range of extinct animals have been found. The Time Team has come to aid hard pressed local diggers in locating the the exact river channel, hence allowing them to reconstruct the ancient landscape.

    A 13th century picture of Christ, strikingly similar to that on the Turin Shroud, has turned up. It's believed to belong to the Knights Templar, a medieval order of monks who gave their name to the village of Templecombe.   4. S3 E4 - A Wreck of the Spanish Armada

    20 years ago, a teenage boy discovered a 400-year-old bronze cannon in the waters close to the south Devon coast. Nobody has yet identified the ship it belonged to. As usual, Time Team have only three days to find out. Tony is looking forward to getting into his diving suit, but the team cannot dive until the wreck's archaeological supervisor, Chris Preece, arrives.

    The Time Team travels to Northern Ireland to the site of the Navan fort, a series of complex earth works dating back to the earliest human occupation. They are looking to confirm a persistent legend that the site was the base of power of an early Celtic king, and he, at one point, had three separate strong holds in the area.   6. S3 E6 - Treasures of the Roman Field

    The Time Team arrives in a large field about 20 miles from Colchester. This is an area typically rich in Roman activity. Several remains have previously been dug up, including coins, an elaborate key, and Samian ware. The indications tell a story of a settlement with high status buildings. Then, using recycled fragments of genuine Roman glass, glassblower Ed Iglehart recreates beautiful pieces.
