It's a boy! With the birth of the long-awaited heir to the throne, happiness seems complete for Sisi and Franz. But Sisi cannot really rejoice. At Count Andrassy's country estate, Sisi is reminded of the carefree freedom of her childhood days. As the courtly constraints slowly fall away from her, the Count’s considerate nature puts the Empress more and more under his spell.

The Hungarian rebel Ödön Körtek intends to kidnap Sisi to achieve his goals against Franz. In joint captivity with Count Andrassy, Sisi is faced with the question of how long she can remain steadfast... Only Countess Esterhazy can save the Empress now. Meanwhile, in Possenhofen, Franz is confronted not only with his father-in-law, but also with Sisi's sister, Néné.

Sisi and Andrassy travel to Vienna to convince Franz of the need for a Hungarian parliament. Back in the cold confines of the Hofburg, Sisi tries to clear her head. But the special affection between Sisi and Andrassy does not go unnoticed by Franz. Franz falls back into old patterns and not only comes into conflict with his mother, but also begins to doubt Sisi.

War with Prussia ensues. But Franz risks the support of the Hungarians when he chases Andrassy from court. While Sisi must prove herself alone as ruler in Vienna, Franz must face a superior Prussian force. In Hungary, the outcast Andrassy attempts to oust the brutal Ödön Körtek before he too rides into battle. Will Andrassy and Franz fight side by side or soon face each other as enemies?
