Top of the Lake

A twelve-year-old girl, Tui Mitcham, walks into an alpine lake. She is saved, and as she changes into dry clothes at school, her teacher notices that she is pregnant. Detective Robin Griffin, an expert in child protection, is called.

Robin briefs the officers assigned to the investigation of Tui's disappearance. Against a hostile atmosphere, she lays out the list of possible suspects. Al Parker tells Robin he's impressed by her and agrees to give her helicopters for an aerial search.

Wolfgang Zanic's body is hanging from a tree, his house is ransacked and a suicide note is pinned to the table. As Al surveys the grim spectacle, Robin discovers a small grave in the woods. Assuming the worst, Robin tells Johnno about the discovery.

Robin finds the boy, Jamie, a friend of Tui's we saw on the school bus. He won't talk. He has “yes” and “no” tattooed on his hands and raises left or right to answer. Robin is convinced Jamie knows what has happened to Tui.

Matt Mitchum hires a gang of hunters to go into the woods to find Tui. Robin and Johnno head in after them trying to get to Tui first.

Robin becomes convinced that Matt Mitchum and his drug trafficking operation must be connected to Tui's disappearance. She's determined to go after him.

Near despair, Robin summons all she has left to get to Tui before Matt. Nothing can prepare her for what she will have to see. Acting on instinct she heads off to confront the dark creator alone where the investigation reaches its shocking conclusion.
