Rath is still suppressing the uncontrollable tremor of his arm with the aid of Methylsafrylamin, when he is called to a crime scene: In a pine grove several dead bodies have been discovered. They are members of the Red Fortress, who had been shot and killed in the raid on the printing works. A telegram is showing one of the dead men to be Kardakow.

Again, Charlotte gives herself to Wolter in the Moka Efti. It is not without reason that this time he can enjoy a special service: Charlotte needs money. For the time being, though, she takes over the shift of a waitress who is serving in the booths. There, she eavesdrops on Zörgiebel's conversation with Trochin from the Soviet embassy, and Wendt, who is Hindenburg's aide.

While Elisabeth Behnke discovers Boris Wolkow's document folder under Rath's bed, a memorable exchange takes place at the Reichstagsufer: Trochin hands visa applications over to Rath, from 15 high-ranking members of the Reichswehr, who had been building up a German Air Force base in Lipezk, 300 kilometres from Moscow. In return, Rath commits the agents Fallin and Selenskij to Trochin.

When Rath and Gräf are returning from their secret assignment in Lipezk they can't fail to notice the subdued mood in the Red Castle: Jänicke's dead body has been found in an industrial wasteland. The young policeman was virtually executed, and with the same weapon as Wilczek.

Greta is waiting for her boyfriend Fritz, in front of a meeting hall of the Communist Party, when Walter's pal Otto turns up. The latter tries to shelter her when Fritz, trying to escape, is shot down by two secret policemen. Otto sees the responsibility for Fritz death with Greta's employer, Government Councillor Benda. The embittered Greta agrees to avenging her lover.

Katelbach has arranged a meeting between Rath and his own informer, but it never happens: When they are only a few paces apart, the man is shot to death from a passing car. In the Red Castle, meanwhile the interrogation of Major General Seeger is going on. His demeanour is patronizing, especially since his lawyer has achieved the release for him and his comrades, effective within a half-hour.

Charlotte surprises Rath by suddenly appearing at his door. While Wolter follows them unseen, they set out to see Benda. Along the way, Charlotte reveals to Rath that the wagon numbers have been exchanged and that Nyssen and Wolter want to secure the gold of the Sorokins. At kilometre 127 , the train shall be raided.

Rath swims to the opposite bank and loosens a hand lever in a switch point. At last, he manages to free the trapped Charlotte and drags her to the river bank. His attempts at reanimation are successful: Coughing, Charlotte returns to this world.
