Looking to decrease his evening hyperactivity and get some time to themselves, Doug and Carrie hire a dog walker to take Arthur on her rounds.

Doug thinks he has come up with the perfect birthday gift for Carrie: laser eye surgery. That is until Carrie ends up nearly blind from the operation.

Doug is about to break IPS' record of 951 consecutive perfect delivery days. Meanwhile, Carrie has trouble dealing with the fact that Holly, the dog walker, actually enjoys spending time with Arthur.

Doug rear-ends Kelly and Deacon's car, and he and Carrie insist that they personally pay for the damage so they can leave the insurance company out of it, but the estimate leads to a rift between the families.

Doug becomes an expert witness for a case of Carrie's boss; Danny and Spence squabble over Holly.

Doug's parents plan a Christmas visit, interfering with his and Carrie's attempt to get pregnant during her "fertile time."

Carrie gets jealous when Doug's attention is focused on Spence's new girlfriend, Becky, a professional chef.

Carrie and Doug go on a group trip to Atlantic City organized by Deacon, but the only other person to show up is Supervisor O'Boyle.

Trying to get Deacon's mind off Kelly, Doug realizes he misses the single life. Meanwhile, Carrie feels threatened by the new office assistant at the firm, Lila, who has an uncanny resemblance to her.

When Doug and Carrie find a decade-old $1,500 check in an old wedding gift, they hope to get a new check and go to New Orleans. Meanwhile, Arthur tries to get a comic he wrote published in Playboy.

Carrie doesn't like the girl Deacon brings to her company's golf outing. Meanwhile, he has Holly care for the kids, oblivious she has a crush on him.

Doug starts to dream more seriously about running his own sandwich shop now that his Uncle Stu has generously offered him a large sum of money to see him realize his dream.

Doug's parents visit while Carrie's on a business trip and take over running the house, making Doug feel like a kid again. Also, Arthur tries to strike it rich by inventing a new type of screwdriver called "the Arthur's head."

When Carrie's new afterwork routine of apple martinis—along with an accompanying much more relaxed attitude—come to an abrupt end, Doug and Arthur join forces to keep her drunk, a course of action Lou doesn't approve of.

As his high school reunion approaches, Doug worries that Carrie's new hairdo will make her look like a librarian, rather than his usually sexy wife.

When the Heffernans realize maybe they should give a little more to charities, what starts out as a nice gesture soon becomes all about getting credit.

Against Carrie's commands, Doug takes $100 from the "emergency fund jar" to bet on a boxing match. When he and Deacon win $5,000, Doug realizes he can't let Carrie know he won big or she'll realize he stole the money.

The fourth season concludes with Arthur visiting a psychiatrist and recalling via flashback a disturbing encounter with his dad that may explain Arthur's abrasive personality.

Doug believes that his new dentist—who once had a crush on Carrie—is hurting him on purpose.
