The body of a computer researcher washes up near Magdalen Bridge, followed shortly thereafter by two other local drownings. Morse and Thursday must put their personal differences behind them if they are to investigate a possible serial killer at work.

Morse has to protect a conservative social activist on a speaking tour of Oxford, especially from the lead singer of a pop band opposed to her “Keep Britain Decent” campaign. Despite threats against the speaker, news emerges of the suspicious death of a man connected with the band and, not long after, the poisoning of someone on the campaign.

Chief Superintendent Bright and a member of a notorious Oxford gang find themselves on the same ward at Cowley General Hospital. To complicate matters further, Morse delves into “the curse of Bed 10,” where a number of seemingly recuperating patients have unexpectedly died, and confronts ghosts of his own associated with Cowley General.

The discovery of a 2,000-year-old body provides Morse and Thursday with a new lead in a five-year-old missing-persons case. Their inquiries take them to a nearby nuclear power station, where they are met with a wall of silence that strikes Morse as beyond the requirements of national security and indicative of something darker at play. Matters come to a head as the autumn equinox approaches.
