Ex-convict Caleb Hodgekiss (Johnny Cash) helps the Reverend Alden by volunteering to get the donations for Walnut Grove. Caleb poses as a friend of the Reverend so that he might get donations which he initially planned to keep for himself.

Mary and John want to get married, but John has a problem. He must decide if he will accept a scholarship and go to college. Mary and John both realize that he must take the scholarship to try to make his dreams of becoming a writer a reality.

Laura and her horse, Bunny, are picked to win the race in town. Mrs. Oleson doesn't want Laura to win, so she buys a great thoroughbred for Nellie. Although the race is close, Bunny wins. Laura decides to return the silver cup back to the Olesons.

Nellie (Alison Arngrim) is injured when she falls from Laura's old horse Bunny. Fearing Bunny will be put down, Laura steals the horse back. Laura, feeling regret and pity, agrees to help Nellie while she is recovering from her injuries.

Laura's imagination runs wild on Halloween when she thinks she sees Nels cut off Mrs. Oleson's head. Since the Oleson kids know that their mother is really out of town, they decide to scare Laura a little bit more by playing tricks on her.

Charles father, Lansford Ingalls, doesn't want to live after his wife Colby dies. As a result of his father's depression, Charles brings his father to Walnut Grove to help him out. When Laura's horse gets hurt, she blames her grandpa.

Lansford Ingalls leaves Walnut Grove because he feels bad that Laura believes he caused the death of her horse, Bunny. Once Laura realizes that her grandpa wasn't to blame for the accident, she looks for Lansford and convinces him to come back home.

After Fred, the billy goat, eats some of the Ingalls' crops, Laura is forced to get rid of it. But, try as she may, it seems that everyone in Walnut Grove has a reason why they can't care for Fred. Laura finally decides to set him free in the wild.

The Galinders move to Walnut Grove, where they immediately begin causing trouble. Running up bills at Olesen's Mercantile and Hansen's Mill (and not paying) are just the start of the problems. The brothers begin to vandalize the town's businesses.

Pa decides to take Laura hunting with him. While getting settled down for the night, Laura trips over her dad's gun and sets it off. Charles is badly wounded. Laura runs to get help, but the only person she can find is a blind person, Sam.

Miss Beadle (Charlotte Stewart) lets the children out early when she notices that a snowstorm is beginning. The children can’t make it home before the storm starts. The men search for the children while Doc takes care of the frostbitten children.

Laura and Mary get an assignment from school to collect and observe bugs. When Laura and Mary go to collect bugs, Carrie tags along. Mary is furious at Carrie when she lets her bugs loose. Carrie chases after one and falls into a mine shaft.

Mr. Edwards and Doc Baker help a nearby town with a case of mountain fever and when they return, they get sick. Laura, not knowing about the disease, goes to visit Alicia and Mr. Edwards and ends up taking care of the both while they recover.

Laura and Mary work on a school project with Ginny, a student who has no father. Ginny wants her mother to date, but her mother, Della, doesn't believe she looks good enough. Ginny sells her long beautiful hair so she can buy her mother a new dress.

Joseph is the son of a Sioux Indian who moves to Walnut Grove with his widowed mother. They stay with his grandpa, Jeremy. At school, Joseph is being bullied. Jeremy finally accepts Joseph when he sees his grandson face the bullies.

Mary (Melissa Sue Anderson) has an accident with a horse in the barn and becomes seriously ill. When Mary starts to get worse, the Charles (Michael Landon) and Caroline (Karen Grassle) take her to a specialist and learn that she needs an operation.

Caroline stays with Mary who suddenly needs another operation. Mr. Edwards accompanies Charles, who leaves to take a high-risk job to pay for Mary's operation. He is working with explosives as "Powder Monkeys" to make a tunnel for the railroad.

Solomon Henry (Todd Bridges), an eleven-year-old, runs away from home because he's tired of everybody treating him different. Laura learns an important lesson: don't take things for granted. The Ingalls convince Solomon to be proud of his heritage.

Laura befriends a new girl, Anna, who stutters and has a hard time making friends. A jealous Nellie starts an elite club and although she invites Laura, she leaves Anna out. While at the Olesens, Laura steals one of Nellie's music boxes.

Mary, Nellie, and Elmer are running for school president. Elmer isn't popular and is frequently picked on at school. Mary ends up dropping out of the election when she realizes that Elmer would be the best one for the position.

Hoping to strike it rich after their crops are destroyed by a devastating rain storm, the Ingalls leave Walnut Grove and go to the Dakota gold fields. But, after a while, the Ingalls realize that greed may have been poisoning their minds.
